Dorothy and Elmer Morman Eulogy—----August 2004
Dorothy and Elmer Morman are amazing people--- and their lives have been an inspiration to each of us.
At Dorothy's 86th birthday we celebrated a Wizard of Oz theme. ... Because no one better epitomizes the traits of Brains, Courage and Heart than Dorothy. Louise always says she is one of the most brilliant and creative people she knows----and that she could have been the CEO of any major corporation. She is a master on the computer and has incredible artistic talents.
When it comes to COURAGE, there is no question she is unbelievable strong and can surmount the most difficult obstacles. She definitely is a miracle. She recovered from her illness when all the health professionals said it was impossible. Nothing is impossible with Dorothy.
And the special characteristic about Dorothy is that she has HEART---with her intelligence and strength. She was always there for Elmer, Louise, her parents, and everyone else. And by the way she makes the best meatloaf on earth!
And the man she married 55 years ago, Elmer Morman, has the biggest heart of all. He is strong on the outside but the kindest person on earth. He never needed many words to express lots of feelings. Elmer in his own way is a richer person than Mike Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, with his $5 billion. He loved his life; he loved farming; he loved being at home......he always said he couldn't understand why people went on vacation---when Kalida was the best place on earth.
He has a passion for farming ---he is a marvelous farmer. As much as Dorothy loved school---Elmer didn’t. But in his daily work he was a master engineer, chemist and meteorologist. He had hundreds of stories that had been passed on to him that he used. He always said that "the sun always shines at least a little bit on Saturdays." And one of his more unusual ones that Bud told me was: "Don't plant corn in the spring until the leaves on the oak tree are the size of a squirrel's ear."
We all can't help but marvel at the fact that these two passed away within a few hours of one another.
Well.......Medically it doesn't make sense....Louise believes her Mom planned it. A month ago, Dorothy went into a coma. Louise believes she spent the times picking out a nice place in heaven---organizing, getting everything color coordinated, and hooking up the computer. Of course, none of us know what heaven is like. But we suspect Dorothy is up there instructing everyone to eat oatmeal every morning, teaching the angels how to surf the internet and singing Ave Maria. Elmer is listening to the weather report and where he can watch Market to Market any time he wants. Heaven is a place where crops are always excellent and bean and corn prices are always high.
Elmer and Dorothy would want you to see this as a time of celebration not sorrow. They have moved to a new home and a new life....but always together.
If you don't believe in a higher being the story of Dorothy and Elmer will change your mind.
